Career Instructors offer guidance for this year's graduates

More than 6.6 million Americans recorded first-time joblessness claims in the week ending April 3, as indicated by the U.S. Department of Labor. With much of the country waited due to the coronavirus, and with just an awful memory estimate for when the pandemic may end, this year's college graduates will enter the most challenging job market since the park of the Great Recession, in 2009.

Some will encounter no trouble in finding a job. Medical staff and other health care workers are most in demand. A few states, including Pennsylvania, have suspended certain licensing requirements to speed the hiring process for new medical staff.

Graduates who can work from home – social media managers, for example, and some computer engineers – also will have options, Danielle Taft, interim director of career services at Penn State Behrend's Academic and Career Planning Center - said.

Others may need to expand their hunt, or even take freelance work until the economy bounces back. For them, Taft has three guidelines:

  • Build a virtual network. For eg: Linkedin
  • Plan ahead – and practice – before an on-camera interview. For Eg: Zoom
  • Always Have a Plan B. Be ready to take a job outside of your chosen field.

Fastest Growing Work from Home Jobs

Sofware Developer

Salary range: $58,000-$107,000

Expected employment growth 2018-2028: 26%

Requirements: BS in Computer Science

With more than 61 percent of computer science engineering graduates finding full-day work in their field — compared and under 45 percent for graduates in general — CS is becoming an increasingly compensating course of study. This copious job market, combined with fast growth, and attractive pay rates may make software development remarkable among other work from home jobs for students when it comes time to choose a career.

Did anybody get a job? These college seniors are sure going to need one

"The general feeling is that people are enduring how they are graduating without a job, and they most likely won't find one if they don't already have one," said Gertler, who is studying quantitative economics and American Studies.

Somewhere in the scope of 57 percent of Americans are worried over losing their jobs, 46 percent have seen their hours or pay reduced and 33% acknowledge that if they lose their job, they will need additional education to find another one, according to a study by Strada Education Network.

A couple of classmates who studied computer science or engineering had jobs lined up last fall, however, others are watching jobs on job sites like Linkedin vanished, she said. "I think people, myself included, are mostly very upset," Gertler said.
